M[articulated] 22 Mch 1707/08 age 15 B.A. 13 Oct. 1711, M.A. 28 June 1715, adm[itted] Chapl[aincy] 12 Mch 1715/16, res[igned] 17 Ap. 1719; one of the Vicars of Bampton, Oxon 17 Ap. 1718, res[igned] 1723; V[icar] of S. Andrew’s, Plymouth 4 Oct. 1723, d[ied] 16 March 1731/32 and bur[ied] 18 Mch in chancel of S. Andrew’s, leaving a widow Gertrude with five small children and one unborn.’
The only Stephens biographical information initially located was in the book title and the brief Dedications in the two volumes by Gertrude Stephens, his widow; the first to the Bishop of Exeter and Deans of the Chapter, and the second to the town of Plymouth, both dated Dec. 20, 1736. The Dedication in vol. 2 indicates that Stephens was Vicar of St. Andrew's in Plymouth for eight years. The volumes were published by subscription; about 1500 subscribers are listed. Stephen's successor at St. Andrew was Zachariah Mudge. The Oxford DNB entry for Zachariah Mudge indicates that Mudge was appointed to the St. Andrew living ". . . one of the richest in England" in 1732. One of the subscribers is listed as Rev. Mr. Mudge, Plymouth.]
