Authority Cited: Bible
Author name and dates: Holy Bible (not clear what Bible SJ used: see Psalms quotation under nethermost and Genesis quote under hell) . [BKG Note: a) 1611, 1683, 1715 and modern K.J. version Bibles all read lowest hell rather than nethermost hell for Psalm lxxxvi 13 (the 1609 Douai translation of the Latin Vulgate reads lower hell). A 1583 London Barker Bible reads lowest grave. The 1539 Coverdale Bible (Psalm lxxxv) and the 1549 Tyndale Bible read nethermost hell, but do not have verse numbers. The Book of Common Prayer (as revised in 1662) is based on the Great English (Coverdale) Bible and reads nethermost, so SJ may have marked the Psalms section along with other markups in a Book of Common Prayer. b) All of the above Bibles consulted read grave rather than hell in Genesis xxxvii 35 (incorrectly cited in the Dict. as Genesis vi 35). As noted in the Todd 1818 edition of the Johnson Dict., the hell reading is in the "Dou. and Ainsw. Trans. 1609, &c." c) In the Dict. Grammar of the English Tongue, there is an inexact paraphrase of Psalms civ 14. None of the above consulted Bibles use fodder in this verse. This paraphrase is most likely from memory. d) Thanks to Prof. Beth Rapp Young (April 2024) for pointing out that the John 1:14 quote for tabernacle v. n., is incorrect. The King James says dwelt, and no other versions were identified as using tabernacled. Todd in the 1827 2nd edition of the Dict. eliminates the quotation and notes that Wesley used tabernacled in his Explanatory Notes upon the New Testament (1754) and John Scott used tabernacled in his Christian Life (1700, 1718). SJ appears to have needed a quote for the verb form in the final work on the letter "T" and produced the inexact quote from memory.]
BKG Bio-tweet: SJ included about 4700 quotations from the Bible (2100 in vol. 1, 2600 in vol. 2) in the 1755 edition of the Dict. from the Books of the Bible listed below. About 62 additional quotes from the Bible were added in 1773 Dict. vol. 1; about 45 additional Bible quotes were added in 1773 Dict. in vol. 2. These are listed here in bold italic: allow; bless; blessed (3); blindness; blow; boast;, bosom (3); both; bowels; boy; break; brother; build; burn (3); burst; call; calling; calm; captain (3); certain; close; crew; disease; dreadful; encamp; enemy; enlighten (3); excuse; extend; falsehood; family; far; favored; fearful; feel; female; fillet; forcible; gain; hold (7); image; incline; increase (3); knowledge; lay; light (5); loft; member; mighty (7); not (5); oppression; ought (3); play; prefer; punish; redeem; release; sacred; sad; say; scorn (2); secure; send; sheep; steep; tingle; tower; vanity; until; wait; who (3); wise; wisher; with. About the same number of quotes appear to have been removed during the editing process for the 1773 Dict. The following items in the Facsimile of the Sale Catalogue of Samuel Johnson's Library, Fleeman, ed., are Bibles (OT, NT, complete): 92, 114, 192, 231, 248, 254, 291, 308, 441, 476, 492, 524, 525, 533, 534, 571, 604, 611, 625, II-1, II-2. Apocrypha [BKG Note: the only book of the Apocrypha to which a citation was not found is the Song of the Three Holy Children. However, Prof. Beth Rapp Young has now noticed (May 2024) that the citation for glorius (Daniel iii.22) is incorrect and that the quote appears in the Song of the Three Holy Children. In some earlier bibles, the Song of the Three Holy Children appears after Daniel iii.23 or iii.24. Perhaps the citation title was too long and SJ referred to it as Daniel.]
